The signs of a Montreal summer are everywhere: festivals opening every other week, outdoor shows and live concerts filling parks and green spaces, terraces packed with locals and tourists alike. And with the July 1 annual ‘Moving Day’ behind us, thousands of incoming or returning Concordia students are back in town.
With the fall term only six weeks away, questions have been raised about whether Bill 78 will affect the start of classes at Concordia. All Concordia students – new or returning – should be aware that classes will begin on Tuesday, September 5.
Incoming Cegep students
Concordia welcomes the incoming cohort of Cegep students. While most of these students will be unaffected by the provisions of Bill 78, several hundred faced or are facing a delayed Cegep graduation because of interruptions to their winter or summer terms.
The university is committed to making suitable accommodation for these students and has already been in contact with many of them to discuss their options. For most programs, affected students were advised to defer the start of their Concordia studies to January, giving them time to complete outstanding DEC requirements.
Students who begin in the fall, however, will register for a reduced number of courses during the fall. The permitted number of courses will depend on factors, including choice program, the number of DEC-required courses left to complete, and still required prerequisite courses. Students must complete Cegep-level prerequisite courses before they can register for certain Concordia courses.
Incoming Cegep students can direct questions or concerns to the Office of the Registrar at 514-848-2424, ext. 2668.
Undergraduate students (returning and non-Cegep incoming)
Classes begin September 5, 2012, for all incoming and returning undergraduate students.
Some Concordia undergraduate students received Incomplete (INC) grade notations for the winter term courses. Students had until May 30 to submit coursework to complete their classes. All INC grade notations have now been replaced by the appropriate final grade.
A small number of students were granted a late grade of Discontinued (DISC), which allowed them to discontinue the courses after the normal deadline without academic penalty.
Returning undergraduate students who have outstanding winter term coursework should be aware that their transcript will reflect this fact and their academic standing may be affected. They should speak to the appropriate departmental or faculty academic advisor as soon as possible.
Out-of-province or international undergraduate students can direct questions or concerns to the Office of the Registrar at 514-848-2424, ext. 2668.
Graduate students (returning and incoming)
Incoming and returning graduate students should be aware that Concordia’s academic year begins September 5, 2012.
Some Concordia graduate students received In-Progress (IP) grades allowing them to complete the work during the summer. Students will be contacted directly with a reminder of their IP grades and the need to submit the work.
The deadline for an instructor to replace the IP grade by a final grade is August 31, 2012. In extraordinary cases, where circumstances beyond the student’s control prevented completion of the work by the deadline, there are provisions for students to apply for extensions or late discontinued grades.
Returning graduate students who do not resolve issues regarding remaining winter term coursework should be aware that their transcript will reflect this fact and their academic standing in the program may be affected. They should speak to the appropriate professor or their program director as soon as possible.
Out-of-province or international graduate students can direct questions or concerns to their Graduate Program Director or Graduate Program Assistant.
