Accolades for the week of February 13

Taking a look at achievements by Concordians

Three Concordians are finalists for Canada Prizes:

Peter C. van Wyck, associate professor and master’s program director in the Department of Communication Studies, was nominated for The Highway of the Atom (McGill-Queen’s University Press).

Marc André Brouillette, assistant professor in the Département d’Études françaises, was nominated for his book Spatialité textuelle dans la poésie contemporaine (Éditions Nota bene).

Simon Jolivet, former PhD student in the Department of History, was shortlisted for the Canada Prize in Social Science for his book, Le Vert et le bleu: identité québécoise et identité irlandaise au tournament du XXe siècle (Les Presses du l'Université de Montréal).
 
The Canada Prizes are awarded annually by the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences to celebrate scholarly excellence in the humanities and social sciences. This year’s winners will be announced at a ceremony on Friday, March 30 at the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal.



History Professor and Chair Norman Ingram reports that Associate Professor Nora Jaffary has published an article in The Journal of Family History titled, Reconceiving Motherhood: Infanticide and Abortion in Colonial Mexico.

The article appears in Vol. 37, no. 1 (January 2012), pp. 3-23.



A number of Concordia alumni have been nominated for Genie Awards, award granted by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television to honour and showcase outstanding achievements in Canadian cinema.

René Chenier (BA 75, communication studies) is a nominee for Best Live Action Short Drama for Ora and Best Animated Short for Romance. Gavin Fernandes (BSc 88, biochemistry) is a nominee for Overall Sound for Café de Flore. Alain Fournier (BFA 02, film production) is considered for Best Animated Short for La Cité Entre Les Murs / Inner City. Steve Galluccio (BA 82, French/English translation) is nominated for Original Song Waiting For Your Touch in Funkytown. In the category of Best Live Action Short Drama, Phoebe Greenberg (Attendee in the Faculty of Fine Arts) for Hope. Michelle Latimer (BFA 97 in theatre performance) is considered for the Best Animated Short for Choke. And the film Café de Flore is also nominated for Visual Effects by Nathalie Tremblay (BFA 92).

The Genie Awards ceremony is March 8 in Toronto.
 



Associate professor of music Jeri Brown is nominated for a 2012 East Coast Music Award (ECMA) for Jazz Recording of the Year for her solo album Storytelling, featuring Woody Woods on piano. Storytelling is a soul-packed project featuring Brown's original compositions plus her unique renditions of Canadian classics You Needed Me, Both Sides Now, Until It's Time for You to Go and Hallelujah.

Brown will also participate as a judge in the ECMA competition and televised show, judging gospel and world music. ECMA is held in Moncton, New Brunswick, from April 11 to 15, with the awards gala on the final evening.
