La Presse and The Montreal Gazette feature an op-ed by Yasmin Jiwani, a professor in the Department of Communication Studies, and Homa Hoodfar, a professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. Jiwani and Hoodfar argue that the Shafia case had nothing to do with honour killing but was in fact femicide. The National Post refers to The Montreal Gazette op-ed. Jiwani was also interviewed by CBC’s Radio Noon on January 30 (see Callers react to Shafia trial murder verdict). Coverage begins at 18 minutes 10 seconds

Saima Ishaq, a Concordia graduate who worked with Hoodfar, recently completed a thesis titled Killing in the name of “honour”: The South Asian Community in the Canadian Context. Ishaq was interviewed by CTV Montreal news at 6 p.m. on January 29 and by CTV National News on January 30 (see item titled Honour killings bear important distinctions in the CTV News video player). Ishaq was also interviewed by La Presse. She explains what motivated her decision to focus her thesis on honour killings.
