Ranking recognizes strengths of younger universities

Montreal, May 31, 2012Concordia University has been ranked one of the top 100 ‘new’ (under 50 years old) universities in the world by the British-based publication, Times Higher Education (THE). The inaugural Times Higher Education 100 Under 50rates the performance of universities founded within the last half-century. Concordia, founded in 1974, comes in at number 91 in the rankings as one of only four Canadian universities to make the list.

The new ranking is based on the same indicators as the publication’s respected THE World University Rankings, but weightings have been re-calibrated to better reflect the profile of younger universities.  More weight has been given to objective indicators such as components of an institution’s core mission including research, teaching, knowledge transfer and international activity. Accordingly, indicators of reputation have been given a reduced weighting.

As the editor of the Times Higher Education Rankings, Phil Baty, puts it, “This ranking shows that with the right financial support, strong leadership and bold vision, it is possible to build world-class universities which compete with the very best in the world, in a relatively short space of time."

“We’re proud of the vibrant institution we have developed at Concordia,” says the university’s president and vice-chancellor, Frederick Lowy. “This new ranking recognizes the dynamism and innovation of younger institutions such as ours, especially in the areas of research, teaching excellence and service to the community.”

In the last year alone, Concordia inaugurated three important new research facilities, the PERFORM Centre, the Centre for Structural and Functional Genomics and the Solar Simulator-Environmental Chamber, a world first.
