Professor sees the signs, protects commercial heritage

MONTREAL/September 20, 2010—

Emblems from Warshaw, Bens, Monsieur Hot Dog, Monkland Taverne saved at Concordia

The proud emblems of a bygone era will be officially unveiled Saturday, September 25, 2010, at an event marking the 45th anniversary of the Concordia University Department of Communication Studies. Signs that once graced the location of a beloved smoked meat restaurant, a thriving family grocery and a popular local tavern – each a site where different communities converged- have found a safe haven in the Communication Studies and Journalism Building (7141 Sherbrooke St. W., Loyola campus).

The permanent installation of the Montreal Signs Project is due largely to the passionate research of Matt Soar, a Communication Studies professor. Soar has spent the past five years tracking down signs whose existence was threatened by urban development, changing bylaws and the evolving nature of advertising. He then worked with a team of signmakers to repair the insignia by using the tools and techniques of an earlier era when these signs first graced their original sites.

These signs will be unveiled and celebrated before a crowd of alumni that include leading figures in the fields of advertising, filmmaking and journalism. Soar and his collaborator from the signmaking business will be present as well as members of the Levy family – owners of the former St. Laurent Blvd. Warshaw store – and others connected with the businesses whose signs will once again shine brightly.
