Concordia University researchers join international scholars to discuss sustainable business practices

MONTREAL/August 5, 2010—

From August 6 to 10, researchers at Concordia University will join 9,000 academics from 105 countries at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management, an event organized by the oldest and largest scholarly management association in the world.

Faculty and students from Concordia's John Molson School of Business (JMSB) will take part in various research presentations and activities to promote the event’s theme, "Dare to Care: Passion and Compassion". Initiatives include helping to produce a special issue of L'Itinéraire, a publication which supports Montreal's homeless population. This special issue was edited by Paul Shrivastava, professor of management and director of Concordia’s David O'Brien Centre for Sustainable Enterprise. The annual meeting will also highlight the results of a collaborative project with the YWCA Montreal where researchers on entrepreneurship provide advice to local businesses.

"Concordia seeks to make important contributions to new directions in management research that is responsive to change," says Vice-President of Research and Graduate Studies Louise Dandurand.

"We are thrilled that so many of our faculty members are actively involved in this conference which showcases the latest scholarly research in management," says John Molson School of Business Dean Sanjay Sharma. "In addition, we are delighted that our Management Professor, Gary Johns, will be inducted as a Fellow of the Academy." Fellowship is a very prestigious designation as only one per cent of the 19,000 members are Fellows. Johns will be the sixth Canadian-based Fellow in the history of the Academy. "This is a shining example of the School’s longstanding reputation as a leader in management studies and research on family business, entrepreneurship, and sustainable enterprise," adds Dandurand.

The Academy of Management's mission is to develop the profession of management through research and education. The first meeting was held at the University of Chicago in 1936. The 2010 event will be held simultaneously at the following Montreal venues: Palais des Congrès de Montréal, Le Centre Sheraton Montréal (co-headquarter), Fairmont Queen Elizabeth (co-headquarter), Hilton Montréal Bonaventure, Hyatt Regency and Delta Centre-Ville.
