MONTREAL/June 1, 2010—

The Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences is holding a special media briefing session which will feature three Canadian researchers on topics of national and international relevance.

When: June 1, 10:30 to 11:15am

Where: Concordia University, John Molson School of Business, Room 2-285, 1450 Rue Guy, Montreal, Quebec

New research featured in this session:

Sarah Hrdlicka, Researcher at McGill University’s Urban Planning Centre: Food is a key determinant of health, an important expense in many Quebec institutions’ operating budgets and an important part of the provinces’ economy. Hrdlicka looks at sustainable food policies and practices within public health institutions in Quebec, with a special focus on the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC).

Jurgen De Wispelaere
, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Montréal’s Centre de recherche en éthique: Policies surrounding the ‘family veto’ and organ donation continue to be controversial in Canada. De Wispelaere offers two proposals that aim at accommodating the problem of the family veto in ways that are compatible with the ethical goal of boosting the organ supply while also respecting donor autonomy.

Marguerite Mendell, Director of the Karl Polanyi Institute of Political Economy and Vice-Principal of the School of Community and Public Affairs, (Concordia University): Dr. Margie Mendell will examine the performance and impact of Quebec-based community investment funds and of direct investment in socially responsible business.
