Concordia University hosts the 2010 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences

MONTREAL/April 29, 2010—

From May 28 to June 4, Concordia University will welcome 9,000 academics from 70 societies to the 2010 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, the largest annual academic gathering in Canada.

The theme of Connected Understanding/le savoir branché, speaks to Concordia’s commitment to areas of knowledge coming together for the betterment of society. It also reflects Concordia’s expertise in digital technology and communications, its ties to the larger community and interdisciplinary links that characterize much of its research. These ideas are implicit both in the conference symbol - an ampersand with a USB plug on one end and a nib on the other—and in the scheduled events and activities.

“We are thrilled to host this congress which will address such questions as the impact of digital technology on scholarly research and research creation”, says Louise Dandurand, Vice-President Research and Graduate Studies. “ Other connections will also be explored such as the links between scholars in different fields and the ties between researchers and larger audiences beyond the academic world”.

The Congress’s academic convenor, Concordia history professor Ronald Rudin is eager for the chance to really show off Concordia. “We want delegates to remember this congress as something special, to distinguish 2010 from past editions”, says Rudin. “In addition to the numerous research-based presentations and conferences, Concordia will be organizing many events and activities to highlight our creativity and build upon the theme of Connected Understanding/le savoir branché.”

The public is welcome and encouraged to come on campus and participate in activities such as Human Rights Day on May 28; Life Stories of Montrealers Displaced by War, Genocide, and other Human Rights Violations with a guided bus tour based on the concept of "memoryscapes"; Montréal à l’écran (J.A. de Sève Cinema, 1400 Blvd. De Maisonneuve W.) : Spanning seven decades of filmmaking about Montreal (from 1934 to 2008); Espace Recherche: On the Cloud Deck (MB Building, 1450 Guy St., 3rd floor), a prototype of Concordia’s unique new research web portal in which “clouds” of descriptors represent the connectedness of this university’s diverse community of researchers; and the FOFA Gallery events: (1515 Ste. Catherine St. W.) hosting a variety of presentations and performances integrating dance and textiles, interactive presentations and film screenings.
