Concordia University Celebrates National Engineering Week

MONTREAL/February 25, 2010—

The Concordia Engineering and Computer Science Association celebrates the 26th edition of National Engineering Week. A series of activities are scheduled from March 1 to 5 on the Sir George Williams campus. The annual event promotes the work of engineering students, builds bridges –figuratively and literally- between the students and the professional engineering community, and aims to increase public awareness of Concordia University’s engineering capabilities.

Events include:

Behind the Scenes Astronaut Training with David Shaffer
Senior Robotics Instructor for the Canadian Space Agency.

David Shaffer, a distinguished alumnus of Concordia’s Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science (ENCS) will provide a personal, behind-the-scenes overview of how International Space Station Astronauts and Flight Controllers are trained to operate the equipment (including the Canadarm 2) Canada contributes to the International Space Station. He will also discuss potential Canadian involvement in the next large International Space Project; exploration of the Moon and Mars.

Troitsky Bridge Building Competition

This inter-university academic competition brings together 200 of the brightest, most creative Engineering students from across Canada and the United States to test their knowledge and skills in designing, building & presenting model bridges.
Each team must design & build a bridge with an open span of 1 metre and composed solely of Popsicle sticks, white glue, dental floss and toothpicks. Last year’s winning team supported 1,191 kg [2,625 lbs] at centre span with a bridge that weighed a mere 1.29 kg [2.8 lbs]!
The day-long event wraps up with the spectacular stress test on these structures (featuring “The Crusher”), culminating eventually - and, indeed, inevitably- with their destruction.

Friday, March 5
