MONTREAL/December 4, 2008—
In the context of the worldwide economic crisis, researchers, political economists, union representatives and students from around the world will participate in the 11th Karl Polanyi Institute conference called The Relevance of Karl Polanyi for the 21st Century. The conference, marking the 20th anniversary of the foundation of the Karl Polanyi Institute of Political Economy at Concordia University, will be held at Concordia from December 9-11, 2008 on the 7th floor of the Henry F. Hall Building (1455 De Maisonneuve Blvd. West).
Facing the challenges of a global economy, the conference will evaluate the importance of Karl Polanyi’s theories as we move towards a new socio-economic framework, including greater ethics and social responsibility. There will also be discussions into the strategic role that Quebec businesses can play in the world of finance.
Participants at this conference will include Theotonio Dos Santos, Chair of the UNESCO and UNU Network on Global Economic and Sustainable Development; Giovanni Arrighi, professor at John Hopkins University; and Kari Polanyi Levitt, McGill professor emeritus (economy) and daughter of Karl Polanyi.
