Installation of Dr. Judith Woodsworth as Concordia University's President

MONTREAL/November 12, 2008—

On Monday, November 17, 2008, Dr. Judith Woodsworth will be formally installed as President and Vice-Chancellor of Concordia University. The installation will take place during the 10:00 a.m. convocation ceremony for the Faculties of Fine Arts and Engineering and Computer Science in Salle Wilfrid Pelletier at Place des Arts (175 St. Catherine Street West).

After leading Laurentian University as President for the past six years, Dr. Woodsworth returned to Concordia in August, 2008. She began her academic career in Concordia’s Département d’études françaises in 1980 and has held various university administrative positions since then, including Vice-President (Academic) at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax for five years.

Upon taking the Oath of Office, Dr. Woodsworth will become the 7th President (formerly Rector) of Concordia University since it was established in 1974 through the merger of Sir George Williams University and Loyola College. The University's Registrar, Linda Healey, will then invest the President with the Robes of Office and former President Michael Di Grappa will present her with the Presidential Chain of Office. The Chain of Office was generously donated to Concordia by the family of the late Judge Alan B. Gold, in his memory. Justice Gold was Concordia Chancellor from February 1987 to September 1992, and he was then named Chancellor Emeritus.

In celebration of Dr. Woodsworth’s installation, the university will host a public event called Imagining Great Change on Sunday, November 16th at 2:00 p.m. at the Oscar Peterson Concert Hall (Loyola Campus, 7141 Sherbrooke St. West). This event will highlight the exceptional work coming out of Concordia and include a talk by the Emmy-award winning producer of Law and Order and Concordia graduate René Balcer; the presentation of Concordia graduate Torill Kove's Oscar-winning animated short film The Danish Poet; a unique dance, theatre and music performance under the artistic coordination of Concordia Professor and Cirque du Soleil choreographer Michael Montanaro; and a performance of Xiqu, in which opera meets martial arts, with visiting Professor Lu Suosen and students from the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts.
