New trends inside and outside the classroom to be the focus of national art education conference at Concordia University, Nov. 6 – 8, 2008

MONTREAL/November 4, 2008—

New media in the classroom and transformative community art education are key themes that will be discussed at a national conference hosted by Concordia University’s Department of Art Education from November 6 to 8, 2008. Entitled Changing Connections, Communities and Contexts, the wide-ranging program will include more than 60 sessions on technological changes in schools, visual and popular culture, and innovative examples of art education inside and outside the classroom.

Men who visit Montreal’s St. James drop-in centre are some of the individuals who’ve profited from this new approach of art education outside the classroom. Privacy panels they’ve created for the homeless who stay at the Old Brewery Mission will be on display at Concordia’s FOFA Gallery (1515 Ste. Catherine St. West) as part of the exhibition The Inner Space/The Outer Place. This exhibition will be presented from November 6-28, and on Thursday, November 6, from 6 – 8 p.m., several of the men will be in attendance for the vernissage to describe the impact of the art project on their living situation and sense of self-worth.
