MONTREAL/June 12, 2008—
Concordia University will bestow four honorary doctorates (Doctor of Laws) during spring convocation ceremonies to be held June 16-18, 2008. They will be awarded to Frederick H. Lowy, physician and President Emeritus of Concordia University; Robert Ritchie, former Chief Executive Officer of Canadian Pacific Railway; Robert Papineau, engineer and scholar; and Laura Mulvey, celebrated scholar, cultural theorist and filmmaker. More than 4400 students will receive their degrees during seven convocation ceremonies taking place at Salle Wilfrid Pelletier at Place des Arts (175 St. Catherine Street West), making it Concordia’s largest convocation ever.
On Monday, June 16, there will be three ceremonies for graduates from the Faculty of Arts and Science, at 10 a.m., 2:30 p.m., and 7 p.m. At the afternoon ceremony, an honorary doctorate will be presented to Frederick H. Lowy in recognition of his years of devotion to the field of psychiatry and his exceptional leadership at Concordia from 1995-2005, a challenging period in the history of the University.
On Tuesday, June 17, graduates of the John Molson School of Business will mark their convocation. There will be two ceremonies, at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. At the afternoon event, Robert Ritchie, former CEO of Canadian Pacific Railway, will be recognized for his leadership of that company which is now one of Canada’s most publicly-traded companies, as well as his community leadership with his work at ShawCor Limited, the Association of American Railroads, the Railway Association of Canada, the United Way and many more.
At 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 18, there will be a convocation ceremony for the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, and an honorary doctorate will be presented to Robert Papineau, former head of both l’École Polytechnique de Montréal and l’École de technologie supérieure. An accomplished engineer, Papineau has contributed significantly to the regulation, accreditation and standards of the engineering profession.
Convocation for the Faculty of Fine Arts will take place that afternoon at 2:30. An honorary doctorate will be presented to feminist filmmaker and theorist Laura Mulvey. Author of the 1975 groundbreaking essay Visual Pleasures and Narrative Cinema, Mulvey is a celebrated scholar and member of the British Academy who has stimulated debate in the film and art world for more than 30 years.
