MONTREAL/June 12, 2008—
Director General of École Polytechnique Montreal from 2002 to 2007 and now Conseiller au Président, Dr. Papineau has devoted his career to building and leading institutions dedicated to the education of engineers. In fact, he helped shape the future of engineering education in Quebec as the director general of two of its major institutions, the École de technologie supérieure in 1988 and later École Polytechnique.
Throughout his life, Dr. Papineau has made social commitment a cornerstone of his activities and has served on the boards of many institutions including Collège Édouard-Montpetit, Institut Armand Frappier, the Ste-Justine University Hospital Centre and many Quebec and Canadian advisory and accreditation boards.
Named an Officer of the Ordre national du Québec by the Quebec government in 2005, he also received an honorary doctorate in 2003 from Université de Sherbrooke where he first began his teaching career as an assistant professor in 1967. In 2007, he was awarded the Gold Medal Award, the highest professional tribute, from Engineers Canada (formerly the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers).
Dr. Robert Louis Papineau has played a leading role in transforming engineering education in Quebec and shaping major national issues concerning the education of engineers in Canada. His achievements have helped shape and adapt the engineering profession to future challenges.
