Biography - Dr. Frederick H. Lowy

Dr. Lowy’s record as a leader, a visionary and a healer has been extraordinary. An outstanding teacher and researcher and highly regarded psychiatrist, he enjoyed a long and distinguished academic career at the University of Toronto before assuming the Presidency of Concordia University in 1995.

Dr. Lowy came to Concordia at a time of great trauma, where his skills as a healer and a consensus-builder were a perfect fit for the University’s needs.

Visionary, builder and leader, these are words that reverberate when people reflect on Dr. Frederick H. Lowy and his decade at Concordia. Under his stewardship, Concordia experienced tremendous growth in programs, initiatives, buildings, enrolment and faculty—all while improving its finances and balancing its budget. His years at Concordia also enhanced the university’s academic and research profile and credibility, announcing a new era of modern science and business, engineering and art innovation at the university. Dr. Lowy is widely credited with this transformation, for leading the formation of a modern academic plan and inspiring the participation of key business and community leaders in the university’s development.

Aside from his reputation as an outstanding academic and university president, Dr. Lowy is known for his engagement in the community and contribution to society across Canada.
