Concordia is pleased to announce that Dr. David Selby, an expert on sustainable practices at universities, will speak at Concordia University on Thursday, February 14, 2008 at 10 a.m. Hailing from the Centre for Sustainable Futures, University of Plymouth, Dr. Selby will share his remarkable success in transforming this campus in the United Kingdom into an 'institution of university-wide excellence' in its sustainability provision.
The workshop for Concordia faculty and staff will take place in room H-767 in the Henry F. Hall building (1455 De Maisonneuve West), and is not open to the public, but the media is welcome. The presentation will explore how the Centre has created a unique, effective model to embed sustainability concepts and approaches across the faculties since 2005. Educational concepts for sustainability to be addressed include social equity, economic responsibility, and ecological stewardship.
This visit is a first step towards the development of Concordia’s overall sustainability plan to further the university’s leadership role and to provide clear directions, goals and actions to move sustainability forward at Concordia. This plan will see the integration of ecological, social and economic priorities across operations, academic, research and community spheres. Public consultations on the plan will take place this spring.
The plan has four parts:
1. Institutionalize sustainability
2. Minimize Concordia’s ecological footprint
3. Integrate sustainability into education & research
4. Engage the community in sustainability activities
