Concordia University to award honorary doctorates to Heather Menzies and Charles C. Hill

MONTREAL/November 8, 2007—

Concordia University will award two honorary doctorates (Doctor of Laws) during fall convocation ceremonies on November 11, 2007. The recipients are Heather Menzies, a renowned writer, academic and social activist and Charles C. Hill, a curator at the National Gallery of Canada. More than 1,500 students will receive their degrees during the three convocation ceremonies taking place at Salle Wilfrid Pelletier at Place des Arts (175 St. Catherine Street West).

At the morning ceremony at 10 a.m. for the Faculty of Arts and Science, Heather Menzies will be awarded an honorary doctorate in recognition of her years of teaching as well as her engagement in cultural politics and promotion of social justice. The author of seven books, including the 1996 best-seller, Whose Brave New World?, Menzies’ most recent book No Time: Stress and Crisis of Modern Life, is a book of speculative non-fiction. She is renowned as an engaging and informative speaker and also contributes widely to international and North American journals and newspapers. She has served on the board of the National Council of the Writer’s Union on three occasions and was co-Chair of its Foreign Affairs Committee.

Charles C. Hill will be awarded his honorary doctorate at the 7 p.m. ceremony for the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science in recognition of his years of dedication to Canadian art and our cultural heritage. Hill has been part of the curatorial staff at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa since 1972. In 1980, he was appointed Curator of Canadian Art and in 2001, he was made a member of the Order of Canada. Concordia is currently working with Hill on the biography of the late Dr. Max Stern, one of the country’s pioneering dealers and collectors who elevated Canadian art to new heights after the second World War.

The ceremony for the John Molson School of Business will take place at 3 p.m.
