Concordia University is proud to co-present with the McCord Museum the colloquium The Golden Mountain: China and Canada, Interconnected. The three-day conference, which will be held from November 1 – 3, examines the rich historical, cultural, economic and political ties between the countries. The conference will take place in the Bombardier Theatre at the McCord Museum (690 Sherbrooke St. West).
Of the 30+ presenters who will speak at the conference, ten are from Concordia, including David Pariser, Alice Ming Wai Jim and Mary Wong who will discuss art connections between Canada and China as well as Gary Evans and Loren Lerner who will discuss the role of the Canadian humanitarian and activist Norman Bethune in China.
Concordia has a long history of academic exchanges with China dating back to the late 1970s. At that time, China was coming out of the Cultural Revolution and their universities were in a difficult state. Concordia was active in Canadian programs to help Chinese scholars and university administrators rebuild their higher education system.
Since then, the partnerships and academic agreements which Concordia built with Chinese universities have grown to involve researchers in many disciplines, from chemistry to theatre and film, history, aviation, and Mandarin language. Most notably, Concordia was the first university in Canada to offer a joint-doctoral program with an institution in China. For the 2007-2008 academic year, more than 700 Chinese visa students are studying at Concordia, one of the highest numbers in Quebec.
Concordia is looking to increase its ties with China in a number of ways in the coming years, including the proposed development of a Montreal inter-university Centre on China Studies that would be housed at Concordia and the redevelopment of Place Norman Bethune as a major public concourse in the heart of Quartier Concordia.
