Concordia’s Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science held a ceremony today to recognize James Gosling and John Holding, two distinguished members of the engineering and computer science communities who have contributed both nationally and internationally to the advancement of their profession and society as a whole. Gosling received the Award of Distinction in Computer Science and Holding was honoured with the Lifetime Award of Distinction in Engineering.
The inaugural Engineering Awards of Distinction ceremony took place this morning at 7:30 a.m. in the Oval Room of the Ritz Carlton Hotel Montreal (1228 Sherbrooke St. W.)
Current VP and fellow at Sun Microsystems in California, Gosling is best known for designing the Java programming language and implementing its original compiler and virtual machine. With a BSc in Computer Science from the University of Calgary and a PhD in Computer Science from Carnegie-Mellon University, he has built satellite data-acquisition systems, a multi-processor version of Unix, several compilers, mail systems and window managers. He also created WYSIWYG text editor and a text editor called “Emacs” for Unix systems.
Born in England, Holding’s resume is equally impressive. After earning an MSc in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manchester, he started his career at British Aerospace. In 1979, Holding moved to Canada and joined Canadair, then Bombardier Aerospace, where he contributed to developing one marketable product per year, an unprecedented accomplishment in the aerospace industry. He was involved in the development of all Canadair’s avionic programs, including the Challenger, Regional Jet and CL-215T Waterbomber, to name a few. Until recently, he served as Chairman of the Board of the Consortium in Research and Innovation in Aerospace in Quebec (CRIAQ).
