Roch Carrier’s Lecture

The prolific French-Canadian novelist, playwright, essay writer and former National Library of Canada librarian will make a presentation about how his writing allowed him to travel. The perfect vehicle to learn about life and human history, Carrier’s literature carried him to places and experiences and allowed him to discover the world.

Biography

Roch Carrier was born May 13, 1937, in Sainte-Justine, Quebec. From the time he was a young boy, he knew he wanted to be a writer. Many of his novels, short stories, plays, film and television scripts, essays, travel books and works of poetry have become classics. Some of his greater successes include La guerre, yes sir! (1968), the children’s story the Hockey Sweater (which the National Film Board made into a short film) and his second book about hockey legend “Rocket” Richard, Our Life with the Rocket (2001).

His collection of tales, Jolis deuils (1964) earned him a Concours Littéraires du Québec prize in 1965. Roch Carrier is one of Quebec’s most-read authors within English-speaking Canada.

Roch Carrier has also been a teacher, beginning in 1964 when he joined the French Department of the Collège militaire royal de Saint-Jean where he taught until 1970. He continued his teaching career at the Université de Montréal in 1970 - 1971. In 1971, he was appointed secretary general of the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde and, in 1978, he obtained a doctorate in literature from the Sorbonne.

In 1992, he became a member of the Order of Canada, and from 1994 to 1997, he was the director of the Canada Council for the Arts. In October 1999, Roch Carrier’s career took another turn when he became the National Librarian of Canada, where his work has led to the removal of user fees from the AMICUS database and the launch of the Digital Library of Canada.
