This morning Concordia University unveiled the maquette of a new artwork by artist-photographer Geneviève Cadieux. This artwork will be integrated into the façade of the new John Molson School of Business, scheduled to open its doors in autumn, 2009. The reception took place at Concordia’s FOFA gallery, in the Engineering, Computer Science and Visual Arts Integrated Complex (1515 St Catherine West).

Cadieux’s work, titled Lierre sur Pierre, is part of the Integration of the Arts into Architecture and the Environment Program of Quebec (commonly referred to as the 1% program). The work depicts a vine fashioned of mirrored anodized metal which, much like real ivy, climbs over the surface of the limestone wall facing De Maisonneuve Boulevard. Passers-by will have a low-angle view of the imposing piece which, when completed, will measure more than 550 square feet.

“To truly come alive, an artwork needs to be seen by as many people as possible. I am pleased that the artist Geneviève Cadieux, whose reputation goes beyond our borders, will enrich this extraordinary collection of public art which is at the heart of our program integrating art and architecture. Since 1961, this program has allowed for the creation of more than 2500 artworks here in Quebec, contributing richly to our everyday life and making public buildings places where art helps define an institution,” said Christine Saint-Pierre, Minister of Culture, Communications and the Status of Women.

“This work, Lierre sur Pierre, is a welcome addition to the noteworthy collection of public artwork at Concordia, a university known for its highly respected Fine Arts programs. It is with great pleasure that I invite the public to visit our new website in order to learn more about Concordia’s public art collection, and to view the works that enrich our two campuses” said Dr. Claude Lajeunesse, president of Concordia University.

“Lierre sur pierre serves as a platform to share Concordia University’s vision, which speaks of cultural diversity, access to education and openness to a diverse population of students through its excellent programs and teaching. The mirrored surface of Lierre sur pierre, like a photographic lens, captures movement and colour from the urban cityscape, and permits the dynamism of the Quartier Concordia to imprint itself on the artwork,” explains the artist.

Geneviève Cadieux, photographer and associate professor in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Concordia, is devoted to producing photographic images and installations that deal with both the human body and landscape.
