Contemporary Issues in Youth Sports

MONTREAL/July 5, 2007—

With hundreds of soccer players from around the world in Canada for the FIFA under-20 tournament and thousands of youngsters dreaming of earning their place on the field, the role of youth sports is hotter than ever.

But with an ever-growing number of young people playing sports, be it organized or just a pick-up game, there’s also a growing number of difficult social issues accompanying what’s supposed to be just a game. From the role of parental involvement to the commercial side of sport, it can be difficult to know when a fun pastime becomes anything but.

These are the issues that Concordia University education professor Lois Baron investigates in her new book Contemporary Issues in Youth Sports. In the book she discusses five themes: Parents’ involvement in youth sport; youth sport and fair play; abuse in youth sport; sport psychology for young athletes; and the commercial side of sport.
