Five Distinguished Individuals to Receive Honorary Doctorates At Concordia

Howard Alper, Jean-Claude Turcotte, André Desmarais, Donald McNaughton and Grant Munro

MONTREAL/June 15, 2007—

Concordia University will bestow five honorary doctorates (Doctor of Laws) during spring convocation ceremonies to be held June 18-20, 2007. They will be awarded to Howard Alper, world renowned research scientist, scholar and educator; Cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte; André Desmarais, President and Co-Chief Executive Officer of Power Corporation of Canada; Don McNaughton, Past-President, CEO and Chairman of Schenley Canada; and Grant Munro, artist, actor, director and filmmaker. More than four thousand students will receive their degrees during the five convocation ceremonies taking place at Salle Wilfrid Pelletier at Place des Arts (175 St. Catherine Street West).

At the morning ceremony on June 18 at 10 a.m., the Faculty of Arts and Science will award an honorary doctorate to Howard Alper in recognition of his exceptional research achievements including discoveries in polyesters, fibers, foams and pharmaceuticals that have led to significant economic growth in numerous sectors.

At the June 18 afternoon ceremony at 3:00 p.m. Cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte will be recognized for his lifetime of dedication to supporting the underprivileged to a better life, better education and better health care services with an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Arts and Science.

At the June 19 morning ceremony at 10:00 a.m., the John Molson School of Business will award an honorary doctorate to André Desmarais for his extensive work as a businessman, philanthropist and community leader.

Don McNaughton will be awarded his honorary doctorate by the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science during the June 19th afternoon ceremony at 3:00 p.m. McNaughton is a tireless Concordia volunteer and served 26 years as member of Concordia’s Board of Governors.

The Faculty of Fine Arts will award an honorary doctorate to Grant Munro on June 20th at 10:00 a.m. in recognition of his legacy for generations of filmmakers. Munro collaborated with animator and director Norman McLaren at the National Film Board of Canada for more than four decades during which the duo helped pioneer new techniques such as pixilation, puppetry and cell animation.
