MONTREAL/April 19, 2007—

22 members of the Concordia community to take the oath

On Monday, April 23, 75 individuals will obtain Canadian citizenship at a ceremony at Concordia University, among them 22 Concordia students and faculty. Citizenship Judge Barbara Seal will preside over the ceremony which will take place at 3 p.m. in the J.A. DeSËve Cinema (atrium of the J.W. McConnell Building, 1400 De Maisonneuve Blvd. West).

Among those attending the ceremony will be Jacques Chagnon, Member of the National Assembly for the Westmount/Saint-Louis riding; Albert Deschamps, Director General of Citizenship and Immigration Canada, Quebec Region; Karim Boulos, Borough Councilor for Ville Marie; and Concordia's President Claude Lajeunesse

ìIn Canada, we enjoy a society that is known worldwide for its openness, tolerance and freedom and its commitment to the values of respect for individual rights and social responsibility. It is therefore quite appropriate to hold this ceremony at Concordia where we share these same values,î says Concordia President Claude Lajeunesse.

This ceremony is part of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of Canadian citizenship. Prior to the passing of the Citizenship Act in 1947, people living in this country were considered British subjects.
