MONTREAL/March 27, 2007—
Concordia University was recognized as a leader in sustainable development today during a gala at the Marchè Bonsecours. Hosted by le Conseil règional de l’environnement de Montrèal (CRE- Montrèal), la Confèrence règionale des èlus de Montrèal (CR…) and the city of Montreal, the event celebrated the completion of the first phase of Montreal’s strategic plan for sustainable development.
Approximately eighty schools, businesses and non-profit organizations signed on to phase one of the city’s strategic plan for sustainable development in 2005, with the aim of creating a better quality of life while protecting the environment. Today’s gala highlighted the work to date of eight of these signatories, including Concordia.
R4 Concordia, and more specifically the R4 Compost Project, were recognized at the event. In November 2006, the Project inaugurated a new composting infrastructure in the rooftop greenhouse of the Henry F. Hall building in downtown Montreal. The long term objective of this system is to compost 28 tons annually.
Just prior to the gala, it was also announced that Concordia has signed on for phase two of the strategic plan, to be carried out between 2007-2008. During that period the university pledges to: - improve infrastructures to promote bicycle use - create measures to promote recycling and composting - improve the energy efficiency of our buildings - hold ecologically responsible events - participate in the creation of a regional centre for expertise in education for sustainable development.
R4 Concordia ñ rethink, reduce, reuse, recycle ñ is a working group of Sustainable Concordia. In the realm of sustainable development which promotes social justice, ecological integrity and economic prosperity, R4 concentrates its efforts on environmental initiatives while integrating social and economic factors into its decision making.
