Prize-winning month for Concordia University

MONTREAL/June 21, 2006—

Dozens of Concordia University professors were awarded research funding, research chairs and prizes in the month of June.

38 professors won Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) grants, totaling $3,050,182.00. Research subjects include:


  • Monitoring and embeddedness: Canadian corporate governance in context

  • Electoral conditions in post-communist democracies

  • Adolescent suicide

  • Bridging the space between first and second languages at school

4 professors were awarded Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) research grants from its Leaders Opportunity Fund (LOF), totaling $603,317.00.

The grants were awarded to professors in the Biology, Psychology, Physics and Building, Civil and Environmental Engineering departments.

Greg Nielsen, Professor of Sociology and Director of the Centre for Broadcasting Studies at Concordia, was awarded the inaugural Canada- U.S. Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in Journalism at New York University. While at NYU, from September, 2006 to April, 2007, Dr. Nielsen will analyze ways in which journalists, citizens, and non-citizens engage in disputes through the printed press by voicing differences over poverty, immigration and multiculturalism.

Dr. Behzad Akbarpour was one of Canada's four winners of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council's (NSERC) silver medals for top doctoral research in science and engineering. Currently a Research Associate at Cahmbridge University in the U.K., Dr. Akbarpour is a pioneer in the development of mathematical reasoning techniques to verify electronic computer chips that integrate complex signal processing algorithms. Dr. Akbarpour received his $10 000 prize for work completed at Concordia University.
