MONTREAL/June 7, 2006—
David O'Brien, chairman of both the Royal Bank of Canada and EnCana Corporation, North America's largest independent oil and gas company, will be officially installed to his position of Chancellor of Concordia University during convocation ceremonies on June 12 at 10 a.m. The ceremony, one of five and the first for the Faculty of Arts and Science, will take place at Salle Wilfrid Pelletier at Place des Arts (175 St. Catherine St. West).
The convocations will take place over a period of three days. Naïm Kattan, novelist, essayist and critic, L. Jacques Menard, chairman of BMO Nesbitt Burns and president of BMO Financial Group, Quebec, Michèle Thibodeau-DeGuire, president and executive director of Centraide of Greater Montreal and Alfred Leslie, filmmaker and painter, will receive honorary doctorates during these ceremonies.
At its afternoon ceremony, on June 12 at 3 p.m. the Faculty of Arts and Science will award an honorary doctorate to Naïm Kattan in recognition of his exceptional achievements as a gifted author, critic, academic, arts administrator and influential shaper of our pluralist society.
At the June 13 morning ceremony, at 10 a.m. the John Molson School of Business will award an honorary doctorate to L. Jacques Ménard in recognition of his contributions to the Canadian business world, as well as his ongoing involvement in community, fundraising and cultural affairs.
At the June 13 afternoon ceremony, at 3 p.m. the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science will award an honorary doctorate to Michèle Thibodeau-DeGuire in recognition not only of her twenty years as a civil engineer, but also as diplomat, philanthropic leader and for her continuing efforts to assist underprivileged Montrealers.
At the June 14 morning ceremony, at 10 a.m. the Faculty of Fine Arts will award an honorary doctorate to Alfred Leslie in recognition of his lifetime of work as a world-renowned painter and filmmaker as well as his important contributions to the history of both painting and cinema.
This June, 4,117 graduates will join Concordia’s alumni ranks. They will receive degrees, diplomas or certificates from Concordia’s faculties of Arts and Science, Fine Arts, Engineering and Computer Science, the John Molson School of Business and the School of Graduate Students.
