Major Endowment to Promote Concordia's Fine Arts

MONTREAL/May 24, 2006—

On Tuesday, May 23, Concordia University’s Faculty of Fine Arts (FOFA) was awarded a series of new Studio Arts Fellowships. These fellowships will be funded through an endowment of $1,000,000.00, established through the generosity of Dale and Nick Tedeschi.

These fellowships will be available to students in FOFA’s Department of Studio Arts to pursue a course of study leading to a Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) in Painting, Drawing or Sculpture. The purpose of these renewable fellowships is to support our young, emerging artists who are on the cutting edge of these studies. “This unparalleled gift from the Tedeschi family is a most appreciated recognition of the work done by these ambitious and creative students,” said FOFA’s Dean, Catherine Wild.

The announcement was made during the unveiling, by Concordia University President Dr. Claude Lajeunesse, of a bronze mural Trans-Terre/Trans-Earth (1981) by Yves Trudeau. Mr Trudeau is the founding president of the Quebec Sculptors Association, a member of the Royal Canadian Academy, received the Order of Canada and taught for many years at UQAM. The mural is also a gift from the Tedeschi family.

The mural will have its permanent home adjacent to the FOFA Gallery, in the new Engineering, Computer Science and Visual Arts complex. “What makes the Trudeau work so appropriate to this site is its various symbolic elements tying in traditional and innovative disciplines-which have become Concordia’s hallmarks” said Dr. Lajeunesse.

The Trudeau work will not be the only sculpture to grace the York Corridor of the EV complex. During the event, Randall Anderson was named as winner of the FOFA’s first Sculpture Court competition for his work Zoom! This competition was open to current students and recent graduates of the FOFA Graduate Studies Program. Anderson’s proposal will be commissioned to be installed in September, 2006 at the launch of the FOFA gallery. This gallery will be Montreal’s newest forum for contemporary Canadian art.
