Discovering Europe: the History of European Currencies

MONTREAL/March 30, 2006—

In partnership with the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Concordia University will present the exhibit Dècouvrir l'Europe, du troc à la monnaie / Discovering Europe: The History of European Currencies, from April 1 to 13, in the atrium of the J.W. McConnell Building (1400 de Maisonneuve Blvd. West).

The exhibit which was commissioned by the Press and Information Office of the Federal Republic of Germany, has been presented in some 20 cities across France, and will make its North American debut at Concordia. It retraces the history of commerce and the development of trade from barter in goods to actual currency through a combination of illustrations and text. It will also examine the European Union's guiding principles in establishing a common European currency.

ìWe are proud to present this exhibition related to the introduction of the Euro and are pleased to have Concordia University as our partner for this event, not only because of Concordia's obvious expertise in economics and business ñ being home to the John Molson School of Business ñ but also as a venue of previous notable exhibitions and conferencesî, said Hartmut Scheer, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Parallel to the exhibit, a conference will be presented on The Euro: Expressing a World in Motion ñ The History, Influence and Perception of a New European Currency. It will take place on Monday, April 3, at 2:30 p.m., in the J.A. DeSËve Cinema in the J.W. McConnell Building.

Anya Oram, Head of the Economic and Commercial Section of the Delegation of the European Commission to Canada, and Dr. Frank G. M¸ller, professor of economics at Concordia and Honorary President of the Canadian Society for Ecological Economics will look at the initial introduction of the Euro and the phases which followed. The conference will be moderated by Dr. Peter Stoett, Chair of the Political Science Department and Consul General Scheer address the conference.
