Concordia University was today awarded a Canada Research Chair in Corporate Governance and Financial Reporting (Tier 1). The Chair was awarded to Jeong-Bon Kim, who will come to Concordia from Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hom, Kowloon, Hong Kong. Tier-1 chairs are awarded to well-established researchers and provide them with $200,000 per year over a 7-year period.

The announcement was made today in Prince Edward Island by John ApSimon, Executive Director of the Canada Research Chair Program, on behalf of the Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Canada Research Chairs Program, the Honourable David L. Emerson.

Jeong-Bon Kim conducts research on the relationships between corporate governance, information structure, cost of capital, and firm valuation in cross-country settings. He also analyzes investor-, firm-, and country-initiated information structures and disclosures. He will be looking at the reality of today's information economy where access to critical information remains highly skewed and far from the grasp of ordinary people in. In the process, he hopes to influence notions of not only investor protection, but also of the decreased costs of capital (and increased valuations) for firms operating with ethical and effective governance and disclosure mechanisms.

Concordia's President and Vice-Chancellor Frederick Lowy welcomed the announcement saying, "Dr. Kim's research will lead to greater protection for the individual investor and reinforces Canada's image as a world leader in ethical and financial corporate administration."

"Our universities are vital centres of cutting-edge research and innovation,î added the Honourable David L. Emerson, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Canada Research Chairs Program. ìThe ideas generated at these institutions extend the frontiers of knowledge and create a deeper understanding of the complex world in which we live. Communities all over the country will see the benefits of the work done by the more than 1,500 Chairholders who conduct research at Canadian universities."

The Canada Research Chairs program was launched in 2000 and helps universities attract and retain the best researchers and achieve research excellence in the natural sciences and engineering, health services, social sciences and the humanities.
