President of Concordia University honored by the National Assembly of Quebec

MONTREAL/May 26, 2005—

In a ceremony today at the National Assembly of Quebec, the President and Vice-Chancellor of Concordia University, Dr. Frederick Lowy, was honored for the broad range of his accomplishments and for his generous contributions to the field of higher education.

A three-party motion honoring Dr. Lowy was introduced following the Assembly’s “session intensive”. Jean-Marc Fournier, Minister of Education, Sports and Leisure, presented the motion saying, “Conjointement à mes collègues, je félicite et remercie M. Frederick Lowy pour les dix années qu’il a consacrées à titre de recteur de l’Université Concordia".

Following the session, Dr. Lowy was invited to the Salon de la Présidence, where he was awarded the Médaille d’honneur de l’Assemblée nationale. “I am extremely touched and flattered to receive this medal,” said Dr. Lowy. “My experience at Concordia is a source of great pride and I share this honor with all the members of my team who supported me steadfastly throughout my tenure. I am confident that this team will be equally supportive of my successor, Dr. Claude Lajeunesse, who has my heartfelt best wishes for success in his new challenge.”

Dr. Lowy is nearing the end of a ten-year mandate at the head of this institution, after many years as a psychiatrist, professor, researcher and administrator. Over the last ten years, he played a key role in the exponential growth of Concordia, relying on his talents as a unifier and visionary. On his watch, the University’s student population has grown by more than 30%, and its physical footprint has grown by 50% in Montreal’s downtown core.

Leaving Concordia with a healthy financial picture, state-of-the-art construction projects and internationally respected researchers, the citizens of Quebec, through their elected representatives in the National Assembly, collectively recognize the impressive accomplishments of Frederick Lowy.

Dr. Lowy will officially step down as President and Vice-Chancellor of Concordia on August 1, 2005, at which time Dr. Claude Lajeuneese, currently rector of Ryerson University in Toronto, will assume the post.
