CUPFA Fifteenth Anniversary Art Integration Competition
On Wednesday, May 18, at 5 p.m., Concordia will unveil Seascape and the Sublime, a major artwork by studio arts professor Holly King. The work was commissioned by the Concordia University Part-time Faculty Association (CUPFA) to celebrate its fifteenth anniversary.
Located within the pedestrian concourse at metro level in the new Engineering, Computer Science & Visual Arts Integrated Complex (entrance via the atrium at the corner of St. Catherine and Guy) - a critical juncture where public and private spaces intersect - the work is 4.1 meters high by 3.5 meters wide. The selection committee considered several submissions and short-listed four artists, who were required to present maquettes with detailed technical, maintenance and budget specifications, ultimately selecting the work by Holly King.
Seascape and the Sublime, depicts a sublime seascape with a gorgeous sky in turquoise and deeper blue, clouds in tones of pink and orange, which reflect into a sea that gently swirls and eddies. Situated in the background is a group of small islands and in the foreground the viewer sees a large land mass with foliage that suggests a place to sit and view the landscape beyond.
Together with the conservation and mounting of the 1930s York Theatre artifacts and the installation of a monumental glass mural by Nicolas Baier, the CUPFA commission will reinforce the University's commitment to showcasing the arts on the Sir George Williams Campus in the Quartier Concordia.
CUPFA :
CUPFA was certified by the Quebec Labour Commission on September 27, 1989, allowing it to enter into negotiations with the University. With around 1,000 members, the union is currently in negotiations for its third Collective
Agreement, each one demonstrating the growth of the Association and its relevance within the University.
