MONTREAL/March 29, 2005—
On Sunday, April 3, 2005, Concordia University will host a one-day conference titled Democratic Discourse in a Multicultural Society: Issues and Opportunities for Canadians. It will take place from 8:45 a.m. to 5 p.m., in room SPS-110 of the Richard J. Renaud Science Complex on the Loyola Campus, (7141 Sherbrooke St. West). Registration is free but required because of limited space.
The keynote speaker, Howard Adelman, Professor of Philosophy at York University and Adjunct Professor at the Key Centre for Ethics, Law, Justice and Governance at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia, will focus on the roots of our opportunities and discuss possible guidelines for democratic discourse in multicultural societies. The conference will also feature three panels: Dialogue on Campus, Media Responsibility and Courage to Care.
Our universities include large numbers of students from diverse cultures and backgrounds. The conference will examine what universities should be doing to facilitate the search for common ground. Does the media have a role in encouraging the search for common ground? As Canada continues to welcome refugees and immigrants from all over the world, what civic values should we be building toward? What are the means for enhancing the quality of debates in the communities we serve? These are just some of the questions to be addressed.
