Come to Your Senses!

MONTREAL/February 8, 2005—

On February 10, 11 and 12, 2005, the Concordia Sensoria Research Team will host a three-day conference called Sensory Collections and Display. The conference will open with an inaugural address by Joy Monice Malnar, Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and Frank Vodvarka, Associate Professor of Art History at Loyola University Chicago

In Design Comes to Its Senses, Malnar and Vodvarka will examine how architects can design buildings to better complement the full range of our sensory responses to the built environment, not just our sight. Their lecture, which will be held in association with the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA), will take place on Thursday, February 10, at 8:00 p.m. in the Paul Desmarais Theatre of the CCA at 1920 Baile Street (between du Fort and Saint-Marc). This event is open to the public and admission is free but seating is limited.

The rest of the conference will take place at Concordia University in the J.A. de Sève Cinema, situated in the atrium of the J.W. McConnell Building (1400 de Maisonneuve Blvd.West - metro Guy-Concordia).

Beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, February 11, and continuing until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 12, conference participants will be treated to a multisensory exploration and analysis of practices of collection and display across a wide array of sites (museums, art exhibitions, gardens, department stores, bodies). The conference will consist of lectures and the occasional video documentary. The conference is open to the public. Students are admitted free, while a voluntary contribution of $15 is asked of others.
