On Thursday, January 27, Concordia University’s Peace and Conflict Resolution series, in cooperation The Concordia University Community Lecture Series on HIV/AIDS, will present Condoms: Media Messages in a Trans-Cultural Context. The lecture, presented by Firdaus J. Kharas, will take place in Room H-110 of the Henry F. Hall Building (1455 de Maisonneuve Blvd. West) beginning at 6 p.m.
Firdaus Kharas is an Ottawa-based media producer who has led a Canada-South Africa-India scheme to produce 20 Public Service Announcements on HIV/AIDS prevention. In 1995, he founded a production company specializing in the creation of television programs, feature films, and animation. Most of the productions are international in creation, and they highlight international themes such as children’s rights. Prior to his work in production, Firdaus Kharas had been appointed Assistant Deputy Chairman of the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, and Executive Director of the United Nations Association in Canada.
Kharas’s lecture will address his work in media and public education, focusing on cross-cultural HIV/AIDS prevention and children. Alongside the lecture, there will be a hands-on marathon of “Do It Yourself” prevention Public Service Announcements for a limited number of students from relevant programs (Design Arts, Film, Communications, and Media Studies). This workshop will take place on Friday, January 28, 2005, from 1-5 p.m. in room FB 325 (1250 Guy St., 3rd floor).
