The Planners Network, which is committed to promoting socially-just and environmentally-sustainable planning and policy practices, organized the forum Quartier Concordia ñ The Urban Campus, Community and Public Space, to address such themes as the role of the university in the social, cultural and economic development of neighbourhoods; the implications for the built heritage of the neighbourhood; and the impact of urban public space in terms of activity and accessibility.
Speakers include MichËle Gauthier, landscaping architect with the Groupe Cardinal Hardy; Clarence Epstein, Director of Special Projects for the Concordia University President's Cabinet; Pierre Gauthier, professor in the Department of Geography, Planning and Environment at Concordia University; Paul-Antoine Troxler, coordinator of …co-quartier Peter-McGill; and Jeanne Wolfe, Emerita Professor in the School of Urban Planning at McGill University. The public is invited to attend and participate.
The goals of the Quartier Concordia project include improving the use of outdoor spaces, the stimulation of street life, and providing respite for the Concordia community and the public; to optimize traffic and pedestrian flow, facilitate movement between campus buildings, and ensure the safe interaction of vehicles and pedestrians; to maintain a welcoming environment for the Concordia community and the public, highlight landmarks, improve the use of space and promote the display of artwork; and to create a distinct campus environment within the downtown core.
The exhibit in the McConnell Atrium displays the works of the four teams of architects, landscape architects, urban planners and urban designers which were short-listed in the Quartier Concordia Urban Planning Competition with the goal of transforming the Sir George Williams campus from a collection of scattered buildings to a welcoming and cohesive urban campus. The four teams are Groupe Cardinal Hardy ñ the competition winner - aA/Nomade/DGLA Consortium, Daoust Lestage Inc. and SchËme Inc./Atelier Urban Soland Inc./Louis-Paul Lemieux Architects.
