Engineers: professionals who ensure the well being of society

The Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science of Concordia University and the Ordre des ingÈnieurs du Quèbec (OIQ) are proud to present the second edition of the Engineering Fair with the theme Engineering: a profession, a passion! being held from September 21 to 23, 2004, in the Auditorium of the Henry F. Hall Building (Room H-110, 1455, de Maisonneuve Blvd. West, Montreal).

This event will bring together the academic community and engineers to consider the fundamental values of the profession. ìEngineers are entrusted to give their utmost care to public safety and comfort. In addition to the technical know-how, an engineer takes oath to a set of values representing pillars of the profession,î explained Nabil Esmail, Eng., Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science.

The engineering profession itself will have pride of place throughout Engineering: a profession, a passion! ìEngineering studies enable future engineers to gain the technical know-how. The fundamental values of engineers ñ competence, ethics, responsibility, and social commitment ñ make it possible to refine that know-how. After all, becoming an engineer is the art of combining technical skills with practical judgment, while respecting human beings and their environment,î noted GaÈtan Lefebvre, Eng., President of the OIQ.

The event will open with an address by Dominique Anglade, Eng., Director, Government Relations and External Affairs, Nortel Networks on September 21 at 9:30 a.m. The four fundamental values of the profession ñ competence, responsibility, social commitment, and ethical conduct ñ will be presented by the following speakers: Robert A. Walsh, Eng., Founder and President, Forensic Technology WAI Inc.; Jacques Lyrette, Eng., Vice-president, Technology Direction and CEO, ADGA Group Consultants Inc.; RÈjean M. Breton, Eng., President and CEO, Breton, Banville & Associates; and Terence J. Kerwin, Eng., President, Galvacor Inc.

The closing ceremony will feature a presentation by Alain Saladzius, Coordinating engineer, Wastewater and drinking water infrastructures, MinistËre des Affaires municipales, Government of Quèbec.

This year, students from all engineering faculties and schools throughout the province of Quèbec have been invited to exhibit "le fruit de leur gÈnie" during the Engineering Celebration. On September 21, 2004, student projects and other prototypes will be on display in the Mezzanine of the Henry F. Hall Building.

Concordia University's Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science:
Concordia University is home to one of Canada's finest engineering and computer science faculties in Canada. The Faculty holds 147 faculty members and 132 support staff, houses five departments, and offers eight state-of-the-art academic programs: building, civil, computer, electrical, industrial, mechanical and software engineering, including computer science. Ordre des ingÈnieurs du Quèbec:
Founded in 1920, the Ordre des ingÈnieurs du Quèbec (OIQ) has more than 48,000 professionals in every engineering specialty, except forest engineering. The term "engineer" designates a member of the OIQ with a permit to practice, conferring the right to perform exclusive professional services. The role of the OIQ is to supervise the practice of engineering in order to ensure the quality of services rendered by its members, and thus protect the public.
