STERN EXHIBIT TOUR WITH FRAN«OIS-MARC GAGNON

FranÁois-Marc Gagnon, art historian and Director of Concordia University's Gail and Stephen Jarislowsky Institute for Studies in Canadian Art, will discuss the artists and works of the exhibition, Max Stern: The Taste of a Dealer, as well as examine how the works reflect the developments in Canadian art at the time.
Dr. Gagnon is an outstanding senior scholar, researcher, teacher, writer, and curator in the field of Quebec art and one of the most tireless promoters of Quèbec's visual heritage. He has spent most of his teaching career at the UniversitÈ de Montrèal, and in 2001 was named to his current position at Concordia University as Chair and Director of the Gail and Stephen A. Jarislowsky Institute for Studies in Canadian Art. In 1976 he published in it an article titled "La peinture des annees trente au Quebec," an essay that is to this day is the article from the Annales that is most frequently cited in footnotes and bibliographies. Most recently Francois-Marc Gagnon's has published an essay on Cornelius Krieghoff which accompanies the travelling exhibition, Krieghoff's Canada, organized by the Art Gallery of Ontario. Among the awards Dr. Gagnon has received for his publications are le prix Sainte-Marie en histoire (1976) for La Conversion par l'image the Governor General's medal (1978) for his extensive critical and analytical biography on Borduas, and the prix Raymond-Klibansky (1998) for Chronique du mouvement automatiste quÈbÈcois.
The Jarislowsky Institute seeks to advance the appreciation and understanding of Canadian art through dialogue with the academic and museum communities. It also supports research on Canadian art by means of scholarly publications and research tools, as well as projects employing electronic and image-based technologies. The Institute for Studies in Canadian Art intends to produce such materials for the scholarly community, for pedagogical purposes at all levels, and for the general public. The Institute will collaborate on projects and publications with educational and cultural institutions, as well as with the private sector. Public conferences will ensure the Institute's link to the national and international art community.
