MONTREAL/July 27, 2004—
Jaroslav Svoboda, professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, died Monday, July 26, 2004, when he was practicing aerobatic stunts alone. His plane went into a dive and never recovered.
The plane hit the ground near an airport in Westport, a small Adirondack town on the southwestern shores of Lake Champlain.
His friends at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering are extremely saddened to hear about the sudden death of Professor Jaroslav Svoboda. He served in the Department for over 25 years. At various stages during his dynamic career, he was the Director of the Graduate Aerospace Program and Director of the Center for Industrial Controls.
He was most passionate about the aerospace program at Concordia. He worked tirelessly to build numerous links with the aerospace industry to develop the graduate program in Aerospace and an undergraduate option in the same area. He exemplified in his professional career those qualities of honesty, courage, perseverance, and integrity. He is very much loved and respected by his colleagues in the Department. His loss to our community is immeasurable.
