At a reception on Thursday, May 13, at 5:30 p.m., the Leonard and Bina Ellen Art Gallery will celebrate the creation of new staffing positions and exhibition programming endowments totalling $2.5 million (J.W. McConnell Building, 1400 de Maisonneuve Blvd. West).

At an event marking the 10th anniversary of the naming of the Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery two years ago, Rector Frederick Lowy pledged the support of Concordia University and the Concordia University Foundation to build on the strengths of one of the leading university art galleries in Canada and to staff it accordingly.

The Rector will explain how Concordia has made a concerted effort to spotlight the arts and will recognize the key founding families who have staunchly supported the Gallery and the University, namely that of Samuel Schecter, Max and Iris Stern, and Leonard and Bina Ellen.

The recent appointment of MichËle ThÈriault as Director of the Gallery was the first step in this effort to advance the Gallery's mission. Ms. ThÈriault will unveil some key initiatives that are being implemented under her direction. These include the appointments of the Max Stern Curator, the Visiting Curator of Contemporary Art and the Art Education Coordinator. The support of patrons has also made possible the establishment of the Samuel Schecter Exhibitions Series, the Iris Westerberg Stern Fund and the Bruno J. Pateras Internship in Administration.

Ms. ThÈriault will profit from the opportunity to outline her long-term vision for the Gallery - within Concordia's mission, within the arts communities and within the communities at large.

The Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery focuses on the presentation of exhibitions of Canadian and international art that investigate contemporary issues in the practice of art and of curating. The Gallery also acquires works of Canadian and QuÈbÈcois art through purchase and donation. Its permanent collection has more than 1500 works.
