MARTIN SINGER APPOINTED PROVOST

MONTREAL/February 19, 2004—

Acting on a strong recommendation from the Advisory Search Committee, Concordia's Board of Governors today announced the appointment of Martin Singer as Provost for a five-year period beginning June 1, 2004.

Rector and Vice-Chancellor Frederick Lowy commented," I am very pleased with the appointment of Martin Singer to this key position. His commitment to academic excellence is exemplary and he has certainly left his mark on the Faculty of Arts & Science. His understanding of the issues facing the university in the coming five years and his grasp of the importance and potential of the role of Provost is most impressive. I have every confidence that he will provide strong academic leadership and build on the tremendous legacy left by Jack Lighstone."

During his 30-year academic career at Concordia, Singer served first as Assistant Provost in the new Faculty of Arts and Science from 1977 to 1980 and then as Provost in the Faculty from 1980 to 1985. He was also the founding Director of the Council for International Academic Cooperation, from 1986 to 1989, and served as Acting Chair and Chair of the History Department from 1994 until he was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Dr. Singer has a BA from Hunter College (1968) and an MA in East Asian
Studies and a PhD in History from the University of Michigan (1970 and 1977, respectively). He has published and lectured widely on Chinese history and contemporary Chinese-Canadian academic relations. Dr. Singer has been a professor at Concordia since 1972 and continues to teach in the Department of History.

As Dean of the Arts and Science Faculty since 1997, Martin Singer demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities and the Faculty has excelled. He has shown strong planning skills and the capacity to make judicious appointments at both senior and junior levels. The result has been unprecedented growth of the full-time faculty members. More than 200 new tenure-track faculty have been hired over the past seven years. The enrollment has increased by 25% and new state-of-the-art facilities have been constructed and plans for future construction are about to be realized. In addition, factors not easily measured such as professionalism, faculty morale, collegiality and dedication have thrived under Dr. Singer's leadership.

"Martin Singer is extremely dedicated and a hard worker who has earned extensive respect and support because of his integrity and commitment to building a stronger Concordia," said Dr. Lowy. "Martin Singer is always prepared to listen and to re-evaluate his position. He is the type of person who views his many accomplishments as not his alone but as the collaborative successes of his assistants, staff and unit heads, who were instrumental in shaping policy and generating results. This is the type of leadership that Concordia needs."

The Concordia community welcomes Martin Singer to his new position and is confident that he will be an effective steward of Concordia's academic mission.
