Six Distinguished Individuals to Receive Honorary Degrees

For the first time, Concordia University's fall convocation will take the form of two ceremonies, both to held on Friday, December 5, in Salle Wilfrid Pelletier at Place des Arts.

The morning ceremony at 10 a.m. will focus on the Faculty of Arts and Science, including the awarding of three honorary doctorates. The recipients include Natalie Zemon Davis, who has taught the history of early modern France and the history of the Jews in early modern Europe and is a pioneer in developing courses that combine history with other subjects, including anthropology, film and gender studies; Leonard Ellen, a businessman, art collector and philanthropist who has long supported public institutions, in particular Concordia University. The art gallery that bears his name is a Concordia institution; and Jill Ker Conway, an academic, writer and business leader who is best known for her autobiography The Road From Coorain, an account of her childhood in Australia, and for her work as an innovative administrator and advocate for change.

The 2:30 p.m. ceremony will honour graduates in the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, the Faculty of Fine Arts and the John Molson School of Business. Honorary doctorates will be awarded to Justice John C. Major, a member of the Supreme Court of Canada since 1992, who was involved in cases that brought about significant changes in local, provincial and federal policies and legislation; Ronald Lawless, who built a career with Canadian National Railways. Since his retirement, he sat as president of Bishop University's Corporation, is vice-president of the Old Brewery Mission and was an active member of Concordia's Board of Governors; and Jean-Paul Morin, who founded LaSalle College and built it into a 50-campus operation. It has been designated a specialized fashion centre by the Ministry of Education.
