2003 Outstanding Student Award ó Seanna Miller

MONTREAL/October 2, 2003—

Tonight's second Outstanding Student Award is being presented to another exceptional graduate of the John Molson School of Business, Seanna Miller, BComm 03.

Seanna, you won't be surprised to learn, was an excellent student at Concordia, thoroughly engaged in academic and extra-curricular activities outside the classroom. Active in the Commerce and Administration Students' Association (known as CASA), and serving on various university committees, she became involved in campus politics following some unfortunate conflicts among student groups and associations in recent years. A diplomatic and articulate voice, she is a model of genuine leadership.

Seanna was born in British Columbia and spent her early childhood there. Her family lived in Sweden for a couple of years, then moved back to Canada, making a home in Montreal's West Island for four years. The next stop was Guelph, Ontario. After their worldly travels, small-town Ontario was a bit . . . bland . . . but young Seanna, an effortless achiever, remained stimulated with extra school exercises, playing softball and ó an enduring passion ó riding horses. Around this time, her parents began to see just how determined their precocious child could be. Imagine a 10-year-old girl who, on her own, decides to learn to play the flute, finds the best teacher in town and convinces her to take on a complete novice. Seanna went on to win many Kiwanis flute competitions over the next nine years. She's now recording some duets with her older half-sister, Joanne, also a flutist ó their CD will be coming out soon.
Seanna started her university studies at the University of Guelph, but suspended them for a couple of years after her father died. The loss, of course, was difficult for her, but the resilient Seanna ultimately never lets adversity prevail. She brought this quality to Concordia, when she enrolled in the JMSB in September 2000.

This past year, Seanna served as CASA VP, Academics and Student Affairs. She played a key role in revamping the JMSB Career Placement Centre, improving ties with business employers, promoting greater awareness of the top-ranked students at the JMSB and, most importantly, matching business graduates with superior job opportunities.

She also helped coordinate the teams for the 2003 Commerce Games, Quebec's vigorous academic business competition. She introduced international competing opportunities to JMSB students, taking them to events at the State University of New York ó where her team took gold ó and across the continent to the University of Washington. The director of the undergraduate competition program says she was the backbone of organizing the JMSB contingent, declaring, ìSeanna defined a position that never existed.î

Upon graduating last spring, Seanna was made a member of the Concordia University chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma in recognition of her outstanding academic achievements ó but her accomplishments here have been much greater than good grades. At the School of Business, she was well known for her motto: ìBe more than your GPA.î She has certainly set a fine example. Seanna's well-rounded university experience has landed her at the healthcare conglomerate Johnson & Johnson, in an exciting career that will bring her, and her beloved Dalmatian companion, Chance, more travels. Seanna's mother, Ginette, sister Joanne and twin brother Sean are bursting with pride at her achievements.
