Richard J. Renaud Science Complex inaugurated

MONTREAL/September 22, 2003—

In the presence of numerous dignitaries, including Quebec Premier Jean Charest, Concordia University today unveiled the name of its new science building

- The Richard J. Renaud Science Complex - in honour of a generous and tireless supporter of the University.

ìWhen the University looked at a concrete way in which to honour Richard Renaud's commitment, it seemed fitting to focus on the Loyola Campus, where he studied and where he learned to live by the Loyola High School motto ñ A man for others,î said Rector Lowy.

Renaud was visibly touched by the honour saying, ìthis new science complex on the Loyola Campus is a gift to our collective future. IN THIS BUILDING OLD TRUTHS WILL BE TAUGHT AND NEW MIRACLES DISCOVERED. We are glad that my family and I could play a small part in its birth.î

Renaud's association with the University goes back to his days as a student at Loyola College, one of Concordia's two founding institutions. He credits his education at Loyola for much of his success, and has made it his mission to open the door to higher education for future generations of students. To date, his generosity has resulted 116 bursaries for Concordia students. He has also volunteered his time and limitless energy to encourage his friends and colleagues to provide financial support to the University and our students.

The new complex features 33,000 square meters of space ñ roughly half the size of the downtown Henry F. Hall Building ñ occupying five above-ground stories, two basement levels and a mechanical penthouse. It will house the Departments of Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Exercise Science, Physics and a major component of Psychology, as well as Science College, the Centre for Structural and Functional Genomics, the Centre for Studies in Behavioural Neurobiology and several smaller research centres and support facilities. Most of the academic units have seen their space increase substantially and, for many, they will for the first time be in state-of-the-art facilities.
