New Executive Officers To Board Of Governors - New Student Union Executive at Concordia University

MONTREAL/June 18, 2003 ñ Concordia University Chancellor Eric Molson and Rector and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Frederick Lowy, are pleased to announce the appointment of Alain Benedetti as Chair of the Board of Governors and Me Rita de Santis, Charles Cavell and Peter Kruyt as Vice-Chairs. The new executive succeeds retiring Chair Lillian Vineberg and Vice-Chairs Richard Renaud and John Parisella, whose terms have come to an end. All the outgoing executives of the Board will remain as active Board members. Eric Molson will also continue as Chancellor of the University for another one-year term ending June 30, 2004.

Rector Lowy, in thanking the outgoing members of the executive, stressed their strong leadership on behalf of the University: "Our Chair Lillian Vineberg showed dedication to Concordia during a period that demanded openness, understanding and diplomacy. Supported by Richard Renaud and John Parisella, our executive committee kept us on track with our major developmental projects and ambitious plans. They are an important reason for Concordia's phenomenal growth and continued development."

The incoming Chair of the Board, Alain Benedetti FCA (Loy, BComm, 1970), has been a Board member since 1996 and chairs the Board's Audit committee. He also sat on the Board as a representative of the Loyola Alumni Association from 1990 to 1993. He is a partner at Ernst & Young LLP where he acts as Vice-Chairman and Canadian Area Managing Partner. He is active in both the Montreal and Toronto communities and is currently a Director of the Canadian Club in Toronto. He has served as Chairman or President of several organizations, including St. Mary's Hospital Corporation, The Canadian Club of Montrèal, the Loyola Alumni Association and The St. James's Club of Montrèal.

Vice-Chair Charles G. Cavell has been on the Board since 1999 and sits on the Board's Collective Bargaining and University Advancement committees. Mr. Cavell recently retired from his position as President and CEO of Quebecor World Inc., the world's largest commercial print media services company which operates in 18 countries. He now serves as Deputy Chairman of Quebecor World. Mr. Cavell serves on the Boards of several corporate, educational and charitable institutions. The Canadian Cancer Society and The Order of St. John have specially honoured him for the magnitude of his contribution.

Vice-Chair Peter Kruyt has been a Board member since 2000 and is Vice-Chair of the Board's Advancement committee. Mr. Kruyt is Chairman of Power Pacific Corporation Limited, Chairman of the Canada-China Business Council, Director and President of Power Technology Investment Corporation, Director of Great-West Lifeco Inc. and Director of La Presse LtÈe, Picchio Pharma Inc., Adaltis Inc., and Neurochem Inc. He is also a member of the Board of the St. Mary's Hospital Foundation.

Me Rita Lc de Santis has been a Board member since 1999, is Chair of the Board's Appeals and Ethics committees and sits on the Executive committee. She is a partner and Chair of the Asia Practice group of Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg, LLP, and has specialized in international law, mergers and acquisitions and projects and financing. She sits on several boards of directors including the Italian Board of Trade in Montreal, St. Mary's Hospital Center, The Tolerance Foundation and the Association of Hospitals of the Province of Quebec.

The Concordia community is pleased to welcome the new Board executive who will be leading the university through another year of growth and development.

Honoured by the Board
Retiring Governors Leo Goldfarb (on the Board since 1993) and Sister Eileen McIlwaine (on the Board since 1988) were appointed members of the Associates of the Chancellor. Sister Eileen McIlwaine was awarded the title of "Governor Emeritus" and named a lifetime member of the Corporation of Concordia University.

Board Chair Lillian Vineberg thanked outgoing faculty representatives Terrill Fancott and William Byers for their participation and work on numerous committees of the Board, as well as the outgoing student representatives, Chae Dickie-Clark, Youri Cormier, Sabine Friesinger and Sobia Virk.

New Board members
Suzanne Sevigny, Vice-President, Human Resources & Operations, TD Canada Trust, and Hani Shennib, Attending Surgeon, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at The Montreal General Hospital and a professor in the department of surgery at McGill University, have joined the Board as representatives of the community-at-large for a three-year term ending June 30, 2006.

Brian Edwards, George Hanna, Peter Kruyt, Alex Potter, Ivan Velan and Lillian Vineberg, whose terms are ending, were re-elected for another three-year term as representatives of the community-at-large. Sally Cole from the Faculty of Arts and Science and Rhama Bhat from the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science will be the new faculty representatives. Noah Joseph, Natalie Pomerleau and Adam Slater will be the undergraduate student representatives on the Board.
