2003 Millennium University Conference

*MONTREAL/March 12, 2003* ñA multi-disciplinary conference to promote dialogue between the three sectors shaping public life - university administration communities, public policy networks and industry representatives - will be held in Montreal on March 14 and 15. Co-hosted by Concordia and McGill Universities, the 2003 Millennium University Conference will address challenges facing post-secondary institutions.

Conference topics will be explored from a number of critical perspectives engaging ideas as diverse as mentorship programs for the humanities, the creation of virtual classrooms, and pursuit of innovative funding sources. Three panels have been organized which sufficiently frame and address both administrative and academic developments occurring in higher education today.

Panel I: Public Policy and Higher Education (Concordia University)
• Government Programs: The influences "Targeted Program Funds" have on Higher Education
• Graduate Schools: The response to government and present day influences
• The example of the John Molson School of Business: Confronting Change

Panel II: Technology and University Administration Models (Concordia University)
• Administration Structures: collective bargaining agreements & special interest groups
• New Technologies & Distance Learning: the virtual campus or death of the professor?
• Alternative Management Approaches in Higher Education: from the classroom to the boardroom

Panel III: University Research and Private Interests (McGill University)
• The History of the Social Sciences: ethical dilemmas emerging in scientific research and development
• Industry and Psychiatry; an uneasy relationship
• Fundraising and Private Endowments: whose research is it anyway?

The inaugural lecture will be dedicated to keynote speaker, historian and social scientist Charles Tilly, who will be recognized for his longstanding commitment to the social sciences and humanities.
His work has contributed immensely to the tradition of academic excellence and sets the perfect tone for a critical revaluation of higher education models.
