Concordia University receives $4.4 million from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)

MONTREAL/November 15, 2002—

Montreal / November 15, 2002- Concordia University was today awarded a grant of $4.4 million by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) as part of the New Economy Initiative (NEI), a program designed to help Canadians understand the forces that are transforming the world economy and build on them.

William Reimer, Professor of Sociology and Anthropology, has obtained a $3 million grant over a four-year period. He played an important role in establishing the first national group to examine rural issues, globalization and the Internet. This grant will enable him to study how communities have been affected by the new economy from an economic, social, political and cultural perspective.

Gregory Kersten, Professor of Decision and Information Systems, was awarded a grant of $1.4 million, also over four years. His team will be examining the two main arenas of electronic negotiation: electronic media, such as e-mail and videoconferencing, and the decision and negotiation systems that help find better compromises and solutions.

The work of these two researchers testifies to the expansion of research and its growing importance at Concordia University.

The grant was announced this morning by Industry Minister Allan Rock at a press conference held at the …cole de Hautes …tudes Commerciales (HEC) de Montrèal. The funding will support five innovative research projects conducted by three Montreal universities: Concordia, the HEC-Montrèal and the …cole Polytechnique de Montrèal.
