MONTREAL/October 1, 1999—
Dr. Frederick Lowy, Rector and Vice-Chancellor of Concordia University, and Mr. Ronald Corey, Campaign Chair, are pleased to announce that $76.8 million has been raised through Concordia's Campaign for a New Millennium. The announcement was made at the official campaign closing ceremony, held today at 11:00 a.m., at the Concordia University Concert Hall on the Loyola Campus, 7141 Sherbrooke St. West.
Speaking on behalf of the University, Rector Frederick Lowy stressed the importance of Concordia's ties to the external community. ìExceeding our goal of $55 million is certainly something worth celebrating,î said Rector Lowy. ìBut this campaign has brought us more than money. It has brought recognition by the external community of who we are and what we represent as educators and researchers. Internally, it has brought us pride of place and purpose.î
Campaign Chair Ronald Corey had warm words for the Campaign team. ìWinning, as we all know, is all about bringing together the right mix of players, each with their own strengths and skills, providing them with a clear game plan, strong support, and above all else, the motivation to succeed.î
James Stanford, President and CEO of Petro-Canada, representing the thousands of donors to the Campaign, spoke of Concordia's friends and supporters who stepped forward to support the mission of the institution: the desire to advance education.
Marianna Simeone, Executive Director of the Italian Chamber of Commerce, and Co-Chair of the Campaign's Major Gifts Division, acknowledged the hundreds of Campaign volunteers who gave their time and energy to the Campaign.
Finally, it was fitting that the Campaign total was announced by Divine Agodzo, a third-year journalism student, since Concordia students set the tone by pledging $9 million to the Campaign at its earliest stage. His participation, along with that of recent graduates Monika Conway (BSc'99) and Robert Laliberte (BComm'99), co-emcees of the closing event, reinforced Concordia's commitment to preparing its students for the working world.
In all, over the course of the past three years, more than 22,000 men and women ó students, faculty, staff, alumni and other individual members of the community, corporations and foundations, expressed their faith in Concordia University by contributing what they could to ensure the continued excellence of this fine institution.
