MONTREAL/September 14, 1999—
Mr. Moshe Ronen, President of the Canadian Jewish Congress, and Concordia University Rector, Dr. Frederick Lowy, are pleased to announce the donation of the Samuel Bronfman House to Concordia University. A reception celebrating the transfer of ownership, will be held tomorrow morning, September 15th, at 11:00 a.m. at Samuel Bronfman House, 1590 Doctor Penfield, followed by a media scrum at 11:30 a.m.
Samuel Bronfman House has served as the headquarters of the Canadian Jewish Congress since 1970. CJC is transferring some of its resources and personnel to Ottawa as part of its expanded operation in the national capital. CJC's national administrative head office will continue to be housed at Samuel Bronfman House, while the Quebec Region of the Canadian Jewish Congress will soon be operating from its new location on the Jewish Community Campus of Montreal. Samuel Bronfman House will remain the repository of Congress' large national archives collection, an irreplaceable resource that reflects all aspects of the community's history. The archives will remain accessible to scholars, researchers, the general public and, more than ever, to Concordia professors and students.
CJC President Moshe Ronen commented, ìWe are pleased to be donating Samuel Bronfman House to Concordia University, a distinguished institution of higher learning, with a strong commitment to Jewish Studies. We believe that these new arrangements, which retain our national presence in Montreal, enhance our capabilities in Quebec and consolidate our Ottawa operations, will benefit the Canadian Jewish Congress and the entire Jewish community.î
Samuel Bronfman House, a four-storey structure, is an important addition to Concordia's expanding presence in downtown Montreal. It will house a number of programs, including the recently established Institute for Quebec and Canadian Jewish Studies, the Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies and the Centre for Community and Ethnic Studies.
ìThis generous gift underlines the close ties between the University and Montreal's ethnic communities, including the Jewish community, and will allow us to further develop these important areas of teaching and research,î said Dr. Lowy. ìIt is fitting that in this, our 25th anniversary year, this generous gift will allow Concordia to reinforce its presence in the Montreal community.î
