MONTREAL/July 7, 1999—
Dr. Frederick H. Lowy, Rector of Concordia University, was named an Officer of the Order of Canada. The announcement was made today at Rideau Hall, the official residence of the Governor-General.
Dr. Lowy, a distinguished psychiatrist and medical ethicist, will be given Canada's highest civilian honour for his life-long commitment to education and health care. Prior to his arrival at Concordia in August 1995, he was Dean of the University of Toronto's Faculty of Medicine and Director of the University of Toronto's Centre for Bioethics. He also served as Vice-Chair of the Hospital Restructuring Committee of the Metro Toronto District Health Council.
As Rector and Vice-Chancellor of Concordia University, Dr. Lowy has been a wise leader who inspires trust and loyalty from those around him, whether they be fellow administrators, faculty, staff or students. He has guided the University through some difficult shoals, so successfully that the Board of Governors recently approved the extension of his term as Rector until May 2003.
As Concordia prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary this fall, we are delighted that the government of Canada has chosen to recognize Dr. Lowy's contributions, and we are pleased that he will steer us into the new millennium.
As an Officer of the Order of Canada, he joins an august company of more than 3,500 men and women who have been granted this honour since it was instituted in 1967.
Congratulations from all your friends at Concordia, Dr. Lowy.
